Three-year-old shoots 5-month-old baby after getting hold of gun

A young mother has been arrested after a three-year-old who got hold of a gun shot a five-month-old infant in the hip.

Unknown to the children at the time but present at the scene, Paula Marie Concepcion Santos, 25, was detained and charged with child negligence with grave bodily harm.

In Tampa, Florida, the incident happened just after 1 o'clock on Saturday, September 3.

Tampa General Hospital was summoned to treat the infant.

According to reports made public on Sunday, September 4, the child's wounds are not potentially fatal.

Police added that according to Santos, the three-year-old accidently fired the revolver after getting hold of it.

Police in Tampa Bay are looking into the incident. The identity of the children involved were kept a secret, as was Concepcion Santos' connection to them.

They verified that woman had been detained and was facing charges of child negligence with serious bodily harm.

Tampa Police Chief Mary O'Connor said in a statement on Sunday, September 4, "While we're tremendously grateful this infant was not severely hurt, this should serve as a warning to every parent or guardian to immediately go and check that their guns are securely secured."

"Guns should never be left alone, and they should always be locked in a safe with the ammo kept in a separate location. Don't be irresponsible and endanger a child's life."
